(wurd') n.

1. something spoken or written that communicates a meaning but cannot be divided into parts that could be used separately.

2. a sequence of letters, sometimes including other characters, that forms a meaningful unit of a program. A word is used as a name or keyword. SAS words are formed of letters, underscores, and digits. The first character of a SAS word is a letter or underscore.

4. a quantity of data communicated or processed as a unit, consisting of one or several bytes.
