a measure of the number of times something occurs in a particular set or the number of times something repeats in a period of time.

frequency variable

a numeric variable that indicates the number of statistical observations that are represented by an observation of a SAS dataset. When procedures calculate statistics, they use an observation repeatedly if its frequency variable has a value of 2 or more. The FREQ statement in proc steps identifies the frequency variable.
