argument

(a:r' gU ment') n.

1. a value provided to a routine, such as function, format, etc., by the program that calls the routine. Arguments to functions and CALL routines are listed, separated by commas, in parentheses after the routine name. Informats and formats use width and decimal arguments that are appended to the informat or format name.

2. a value provided as a component of the syntax of any part of a program.
